Major Collins and Rosaura Cruz {RMS}
Two members of the Ramblewood Middle School community were honored for their outstanding contributions at the Broward County Public Schools Community Involvement Awards (CIA) Ceremony, held on May 22, 2025.
The annual event, attended by more than 800 people, recognizes the district’s most impactful volunteers, mentors, and community partners. This year’s celebration featured performances from several Broward schools, a student-prepared breakfast by J.P. Taravella High School’s ProStart program, and photography services by McFatter Technical College and High School.
Inspiring Academic Excellence Mentor Award: Major Collins
Major Collins received the “Inspiring Academic Excellence Mentor Award” for his work with the “Dads Be on Duty” mentoring initiative at Ramblewood Middle. Launched in 2021, the program specifically supports eighth-grade male students by improving school attendance, boosting academic performance, and promoting personal growth and responsibility.
Through candid discussions and a focus on real-life problem solving, Collins and his mentees build trust and mutual respect—keys to the program’s success. His mentorship has helped significantly reduce suspensions and prepare students for the transition to high school. His wife, Annejeanette Washington Collins, is also part of the Ramblewood family as an eighth-grade teacher.
Adult Volunteer of the Year: Rosaura Cruz
Rosaura Cruz was named “Adult Volunteer of the Year” for her extraordinary efforts in mobilizing parent involvement and supporting student programs. As President of the Ramblewood PTO, Cruz has increased volunteer participation by more than 80 percent, a boost that has helped sustain key initiatives such as the Debate Team, Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders (MTL), and the HEART Families program, which supports students experiencing homelessness.
She also spearheads the school’s Student of the Month program, recognizing students who display exemplary character and leadership. Her dedication has created a more engaged, supportive, and positive school culture.
