The Texas Rangers drafted outfielder Lewis Brinson from Coral Springs High School with the 29th overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft today.
Brinson has a scholarship to the University of Florida and could be a tough sign. But he fits the Rangers’ philosophy of drafting athletic players with significant potential who can play in the middle of the diamond. He is a 6-foot-4, 180-pounder with power, speed, an above-average arm and the ability to play center field.
“He’s a five-tool player, a legitimate five-tool player,” Coral Springs coach Frank Bumbales told the website MaxPreps. “Runs a 6.4, 60 time, has a tremendous arm from the outfield. He’s got tremendous speed on the bases. He can beat out a base hit in the infield. He can hit for power, hit home runs. He’s got all the tools. And he’s still growing. He’s got a good mental frame for the game. He’s able to accept failure and after he fails, he tries to pick up his teammates. He’s a natural leader.”
Brinson, a right-handed hitter who grew up as a Marlins fan, hit .394 with four doubles, four triples, four home runs and 21 RBI in 23 games. He batted .473 as a junior. That’s why Florida signed him to a scholarship as well as the Rangers taking him with the 29th overall pick. His slot calls for a $1,625,000 bonus.
“We are very excited to select a player of Lewis Brinson’s ability,” said Kip Fagg, the Rangers’ director of amateur scouting. “We have done a ton of work on him. He is a player with great upside and makeup who can throw, run and hit with power.” Read More at MLB.com
