For Women’s History Month, the City of Coral Springs celebrates women for their outstanding contributions through the newly launched ‘Her Story’ campaign.
Women’s History Month began in 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project. Between 1988 and 1994 Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.
Since 1995, Presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.”
Throughout March, the City of Coral Springs highlights five women who have made significant contributions to the community.
All of the women were individually selected by the city commission.
This Week’s Women’s History Month Honorees are:
Claudette Bruck
Nominated by Mayor Scott Brook, Claudette Bruck is being recognized for her advocacy with seniors, her continued support of the business community through the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce, and her dedicated service to improving the lives of the underserved in the community.
“Claudette Bruck is a community servant with a huge heart,” said Mayor Brook. “She has been unafraid to take risks and even after she termed out as a City Commissioner, continued serving others. Her contributions to this city are immeasurable, and we are fortunate to have women like her making such an impact in our city.”
Vivian Suarez
Nominated by Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons, Vivian Suarez is being honored for her contributions to the city’s youth education.
“Vivian Suarez leads with compassion, integrity, and determination to ensure students believe in their own success and have the tools needed to achieve that success,” said Vice Mayor Simmons. “She confronts challenges with poise in search of the best solutions. Suarez is the definition of a strong woman, and any young person’s life would be much more improved with her guiding them.”
Mary Boast
Nominated by Commissioner Shawn Cerra, Mary Boast is being recognized for her dedication and commitment to ensuring the safety of the city’s children for the last 33 years through the Safety Town program.
“Mary Boast has implemented one of the most important and valuable programs our city has to offer our youngest residents,” said Commissioner Cerra. “Her work in implementing and running Safety Town for more than three decades is one of the reasons that Coral Springs is the best city to live, work and raise a family.”
Lindsay Poveromo-Joly
Nominated by Commissioner Nancy Metayer, the City of Coral Springs recognizes Lindsay Poveromo for her passionate influence in engaging the community through local government.
“She is an overall superwoman. Lindsay embodies strength, integrity, drive, and compassion. Her dedication to advocacy touches many lives globally, and I am proud to call her a resident of Coral Springs,” said Commissioner Metayer.
Joan Kohl
Commissioner Joy Carter nominated Joan Kohl to be honored for her achievements and influence in the community.
“Conviction, mixed with passion, gives way to a relentless pursuit of the dream and vision that boils inside of oneself,” said Commissioner Carter. “This accurately describes Joan and the example she sets as a female leader pursuing her dream, which is ultimately for the good of all nature, animals, and people.”
The city encourages residents and local business owners to highlight other inspirational women in the community who are making an impact or influence others by using #HerStoryCS on social media with all the ways the nominee has contributed positively to Coral Springs.
Photos and feature stories will be shared on social media platforms and the city website throughout March’s Women’s History Month.
