Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons Appointed to Florida League of Cities Advocacy Committee

The Florida League of Cities announced the appointment of Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons to serve on their 2021-2022 Advocacy Committee.

The Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments. As an Advocacy Committee member, Vice Mayor Simmons will help develop ideas and activities that will strengthen the Leagues’ influence with state officials, help determine the impacts of legislative proposals on municipal operations and functions and keep their staff informed on communications and activities with legislators.

Elected to office in November 2018, Simmons made history as the first elected African American commissioner in Coral Springs since the city’s incorporation in 1963. He was appointed as vice mayor in 2020.

“I recognize that one of the best ways to advocate for the 133,000 residents of Coral Springs is to be actively engaged and informed about policies and decisions made on the state and federal level,” said Vice Mayor Simmons. “From protecting Home Rule to building key relationships throughout the state, our city’s work with FLC is a benefit to our residents now and in the future.”

The Advocacy Committee is responsible for contacting state elected officials directly to advocate the Leagues’ Legislative Action Agenda and other key issues and provide strategic direction on their lobbying initiatives.

Advocacy committee members are appointed annually by the League’s president. Florida League of Cities President Phillip Walker, Commissioner for the City of Lakeland, made the appointments for this term.
