At the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, the Mayor and Commissioners held a moment of silence for Warrant Officer Joseph Schiro who died in Afghanistan.
Schiro, 27, a graduate of JP Taravella High School is from the Shadow Wood area of Coral Springs. He died on October 6, while on patrol in the Chak district of Wardak province.
Schiro was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group’s 1st Special Forces Battalion where he was on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan. He also served in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division’s 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in 2006.
The governor ordered the city to lower their flags last Monday in his honor.
Mayor Roy Gold said that the city sent Coral Springs Fire Department personnel and the Coral Springs Police Department Honor Guard to his memorial and service last week. He also requested a chaplain contact the family to give their condolences. At the meeting, all city officials had signed a letter that would be sent to Schiro’s family.
Mayor Roy Gold announced that they ordered a commemorative memorial brick to be placed at Veteran’s Park in his honor. Everyone is welcome to attend at Veteren’s Park on Sunday, November 11 at 10:30 am.
