Enlightening the debate world on fire, Sawgrass Springs Middle School has recently partnered with NSU’s “Street Law” Mock Trial program to compete against students up to grade 12 across the state, being one of few middle schools to participate in the program.
Having grown from 12 students to over 100 in the past few years under debate coach Linda Pierre’s leadership, SSMS was ready to excel recently participating in arguing a civil case of a stolen $25,000 ring on November 18, 2023, at the Downtown Fort Lauderdale Courthouse overseen by Judge Diaz.
“This is a great program for all students. We see debate promotes self-confidence and critical thinking; a lot of the students simply enjoy the challenge,” said Pierre, Ph.D. teacher and debate instructor at SSMS.
In addition to the Mock Trial events, students can also participate in the monthly debate and speech competitions hosted at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, boasting over 700 regular attendees across Broward County. The next competition will take place on Thursday, January 18, 2024.
Florida Southern College will be facilitating the next state-wide competition slated for Saturday, April 12, 2023, taking place at the Fort Lauderdale Courthouse, arguing the case of Jessie McGee vs. Cassie More.
Although the SSMS debate program is exclusive to the school, all students interested are encouraged to sign up for their school program to make a statement.
