The Coral Springs Police Department is seeking approval to purchase a new tactical robot designed for high-risk, indoor SWAT operations, according to a city memo.
The cost of the contract to purchase the Mini-CALIBER robot from ICOR Technology of Ottawa, Canada would be $107,633.96. The city commission is scheduled to vote on the contract at its meeting Wednesday.
According to the memo, the new robot is intended to bolster police SWAT operations, improve officer safety and operational efficiency, and help protect the public during high-risk situations—particularly those that happen indoors.
The department wants to replace its aging 2009 Talon robot, which officials said is at the end of its service life and lacks the capabilities police need for “high-risk incidents,” the memo states.
The recommended replacement robot, the ICOR Mini, takes high-definition video, uses thermal imaging, and boasts advanced sensors that give officers vital, real-time information while maintaining distance from dangerous areas, according to police.
The robot’s equipment package also includes an attachment that can safely deploy chemical munitions into areas where suspects are barricaded, reducing the need for direct confrontation, the memo states.
