Community leaders, educators, and supporters gathered on April 11 for the annual Live for Alyssa Gala, raising more than $40,000 for a new Broward County Public Schools K-9 trained to detect firearms and ammunition.
Hosted by the organization Make Our Schools Safe at Margaritaville Beach Resort, the event honored the legacy of Alyssa Alhadeff while supporting school safety initiatives locally and nationwide.
The funding will help add a third detection K-9 to Broward schools, a proactive measure aimed at identifying weapons and preventing potential threats before they occur.
As part of the evening’s fundraising, a donation was also presented to James S. Hunt Elementary School in Coral Springs to help purchase a security vehicle. Additional funds were contributed to the Alyssa Alhadeff School Safety Fund in West Virginia to support safety improvements in schools across that state.
“We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from our community,” said Lori Alhadeff, founder of Make Our Schools Safe and Alyssa’s mother. “Because of all of you, Alyssa’s legacy lives on — not just in memory, but in action. Together, we are saving lives.”
The gala also highlighted the growth of student-led MOSS Clubs, with 35 active chapters focused on school safety, mental wellness and student connection.
Organizers said proceeds from the event will directly support MOSS programming and critical safety enhancements in schools across the country.
Make Our Schools Safe was founded following the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, where 17 people were killed, including Alyssa Alhadeff. The nonprofit continues to advocate for school safety measures, including Alyssa’s Law, and invests in initiatives designed to protect students and staff.
