Cappies Nominees from Coral Springs and Parkland.
Drama or musical productions from Marjory Stoneman Douglas, J.P. Taravella, Coral Glades, and Coral Springs High School have been nominated for Cappies in theater excellence.
Presented by the Broward Center and South Florida Cappies Inc., the competition features students from 28 Broward and Palm Beach County schools competing in 49 categories.
In a ceremony modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, awards will be given to performers, orchestras, designers, technicians, publicists, and other creatives.
The evening kicks off with a high-energy opening number featuring students from nominated schools under the direction of Music Director Nic Aquino and Choreographer Madeline Dunn.
Leading the musical nominations this year are Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s Alice By Heart and NSU University School’s Hadestown: Teen Edition, both earning 21 nods. South Plantation High School’s Ride The Cyclone (High School Edition) follows closely with 19 nominations.
In the play categories, Palm Beach County’s A.W. Dreyfoos School for the Arts garnered 14 nominations for Metamorphoses, marking the second consecutive year it led in this category. Archbishop McCarthy High School’s Arsenic and Old Lace received 13 nominations.
Cooper City High School topped the criticism category for the second straight year with seven nominations.
The Cappies Awards program relies on student critics from participating schools who attend productions at other schools and write reviews. These reviews are edited by theater educators and published on FloridaTheaterOnStage.com. Winners are determined through a weighted peer-review voting system conducted by students.
