Putting it mildly, Coral Springs resident Jeff Evans knows a thing or two about beer; in fact, he knows quite a bit more than a thing or two when it comes to brewing his own craft beers.
For that reason, the former Big Bear Brewing Company brewmaster is in the process of establishing his own restaurant-brewery in the new Downtown Coral Springs, on the southwest corner of University Drive and Sample Road in Cornerstone Plaza. The business will be aptly named the Coral Springs Brewing Company.
Despite its moniker, Evans plans to operate it differently from many other drinking establishments. “It’s not just a brewery,” he said. “The restaurant will be the main focus. A stand-alone brewery is not a good business model.”
He points out the money is in the food, and if one just opens a brewery, they’re just catering to one single demographic.
Evans is a South Florida native and has lived in Coral Springs since the eighth grade. He is a retired Davie firefighter and a United States Marine Corps veteran, having served two deployments in Iraq. Evans and his wife, Jessica, live in the Treasure Island section.
He describes himself and his wife as hard-working, blue-collar community members.
“We are the residents who are the workers,” he said, “the under-appreciated workers for someone else’s will.”
Evans anticipates opening by the second quarter of 2026. He said the location is waiting for him to show them he has raised enough capital. He is in the process of seeking more investors for his business venture.
“I need that big investor,” he said.
Based on his personal experience and knowledge of the restaurant business in Coral Springs, he plans to do things differently. He said most of the restaurants now operating here are big chains that tend to charge patrons exorbitant amounts for both food and beverage.
He anticipates his Cornerstone location will provide more foot traffic, allowing him to keep prices down.
“I’m trying to bring an affordable, family-friendly dining experience to Coral Springs,” he said, adding his goal is to bring made-from-scratch quality food and award-winning craft beer to the community. “We’ll provide good food at decent prices. I have consultants. The business model is sustainable. We will offer lower prices at higher volume.”
The Coral Springs Brewing Company will have sit-down dining and live music with a single performer. He does not want to blast rock band music, making it impossible for diners to converse.
In addition to his own craft beers, they plan on having specialty whiskeys like bourbon. There will be small-plate dishes available on the menu. “We want to give it a Cajun twist, but not spicy,” he said, adding that their highest profit margin will be in the beer because they make it themselves.
