Warrant Leads to Arrest of Driver Accused in July Fatal Coral Springs DUI Crash

A man accused of driving drunk and causing a fatal rear-end crash in Coral Springs in July has now been taken into custody following the issuance of a warrant in connection with the case.

Joseph Adam Callejo, 42, of Margate, was taken into custody on September 9 following the completion of an investigation into a July 20 crash at West Sample Road and Turtle Run Boulevard that left one person dead, according to Coral Springs Police Department records. He now faces charges including DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, DUI with property damage or injury, DUI-first offense, and refusal to submit to testing.

The crash happened shortly after 4:45 p.m. as Callejo was driving a 2017 blue Toyota Tundra westbound on Sample Road, police said.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Callejo was speeding and quickly changed lanes before crashing into the rear of a 2022 silver Toyota that was stopped at a red light at Turtle Run Boulevard.

The victim was taken by Coral Springs Fire Rescue to Broward Health North, where the person was pronounced dead shortly afterward, police said.

When officers spoke with Callejo at the scene, they allegedly observed several signs of impairment, including bloodshot and watery eyes, incoherent speech, stuttering, swaying while standing, and an odor of alcohol that police said became stronger as he spoke.

Police said Callejo refused to perform standardized field sobriety exercises. After he was arrested and taken to the Coral Springs Police Department, investigators said he also refused to provide breath and blood samples when requested.

Authorities subsequently obtained a warrant authorizing a blood draw. Two samples were taken at the police department and submitted to the department’s evidence unit, according to the affidavit.

Investigators also noted that Callejo’s truck had front-end damage consistent with the high-speed collision and that multiple airbags had deployed. Officers reported finding a foam drinking cup inside the truck.

After the July arrest, investigators transported Callejo to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical clearance and then to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

A warrant was later issued in connection with the case, and Callejo has now been taken into custody to face the charges stemming from the fatal crash.
