The J.P. Taravella High School Drama Department will showcase student talent and leadership during its annual Festival of Plays in October.
The festival will feature four one-act productions, including three led entirely by student directors. The opportunity gives students hands-on experience directing casts and bringing stories to the stage.
“Our Festival of Plays gives students the opportunity to step into leadership roles and experience theater from a completely different perspective,” Drama Director Lori Sessions said. “By directing their own productions, they develop valuable skills in communication, collaboration and problem-solving while also creating more opportunities for students to perform and share their talents with the community.”
The featured productions include “Fourteen” by Alice Gerstenberg, directed by Sophia Greene; “Why We Like Love Stories” by Stephen Gregg, co-directed by Emma Khodadadi and Saniya Duran; and “Dracula: The Death of Nosferatu,” directed by Arianna Gilson.
The selections offer audiences a mix of comedy, romance, suspense and classic horror.
The evening will conclude with “Decision Height” by Meredith Dayna Levy, Taravella’s entry in the District 7 Thespian Festival. Directed by Sessions, the play is based on the true story of the Women Air Force Service Pilots, or WASP, during World War II and highlights the courage and contributions of the female aviators who supported the war effort.
“I love bringing history to life through theater,” Sessions said. “‘Decision Height’ allows students and audiences to learn about the remarkable women of the WASP program and the important role they played in history.”
Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, and Friday, Oct. 2, in the J.P. Taravella High School auditorium, 10600 Riverside Drive in Coral Springs.
Following each performance, guests may attend a complimentary dessert reception provided by Taravella’s ProStart Culinary Program.
