A Message from Coral Springs Chief Clyde Parry
It’s summertime again and anyone who outside knows it is hot. Many of us will seek refuge from the heat by jumping in the pool, so now is a good time to remind you about pool safety.
There is no doubt the safety of children remains our number one concern. Sadly, the number one cause of accidental death for children under the age of five in South Florida is drowning. Unlike so many tragedies we deal within the law enforcement profession, drowning is entirely preventable. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or caregiver, I encourage you to:
• Learn CPR
• Never leave children unsupervised near any body of water – not even for a moment
• Sign your children up for swimming lessons
• Never rely on flotation devices to protect your child in any body of water
• Install a pool fence and alarms on every door that leads to water
Along with the summer comes Hurricane Season. As I am writing this, a tropical cyclone is forming and may become Tropical Storm Isaias. Remember, yesterday was the best day to prepare for hurricane season, today is the second-best day to prepare. I urge you to prepare by stocking up on hurricane supplies and making a hurricane plan. Please consider stocking up on your emergency food and water supplies, medicines and first aid kits, an emergency power source, flashlights, batteries, and a fire extinguisher.
Our department works closely with state and federal partners to improve our hurricane response. Last year we utilized social media and live streams from our Emergency Operations Center to ensure residents were well-informed about power outages, curfews, and traffic concerns. I encourage you to follow us on Facebook and Twitter @CoralSpringsPolice. Please do not wait for a storm to threaten us before you have your supplies and plans in place.
As our COVID-19 numbers continue to climb, I encourage you to take every safety precaution to protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors. The best things we can do to protect each other is to wear face coverings, wash our hands often and thoroughly, and practice social distancing. These three important measures drastically reduce your chances of contracting and/or spreading the virus. Please take the time to thank our hospital workers. They are working hard to care for us during this pandemic.
In closing, I want to express my gratitude to all of the residents who came out to show their patriotism during our 4th of July parade. It was my pleasure to participate in the parade. Seeing the show of support for our Country, as well as the police department, energized me. I love this country, this city, and our residents. Please look out for each other and be safe.
As always, if you see something suspicious or unusual in the community, you have the power to “Make a Call, and Make a Difference” by calling our non-emergency number at (954) 344-1800.
