Coral Springs commissioners, serving in their role as the city’s charter school board of directors, will vote Wednesday on whether to increase the previously approved charter school budget by $1.3 million, bringing the total annual allocation to $20.6 million, city records show.
According to a city memo, expenditures from the Coral Springs Charter School Fund were budgeted at $19,309,603 for fiscal year 2025, but the actual expenditures are estimated at $20,609,603.
The overage of $1.3 million, the memo said, was due to higher costs related to expenses including instructional licenses, testing, textbooks, increased student enrollment, school recognition payouts, contracted security services, more community programs, and transportation costs for athletic events. Those expenditures are offset by various revenue sources including local grants, according to the city.
The requested amendment updates the fiscal year 2025 budget, which covered the period spanning Oct. 1, 2024 to Sept. 30, 2025, and reflects the increased Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds received and spent during that period to cover expenses, officials said. The requested amendment is for that earlier budget rather than the latest budget adopted in September.
Wednesday’s scheduled vote is the first of two votes needed to approve the funding, records show.
Coral Springs Charter School funding is primarily provided by the state through the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP), which allocates public funds based on student enrollment. Charter schools are tuition-free public schools.
The city also provides discretionary funding for some school-related costs.
The Coral Springs City Commission serves as the governing board of the Coral Springs Charter School, while Charter Schools USA, a Fort Lauderdale-based education management organization, provides professional management for all aspects of charter school operation in the city.
Plans for a new, larger Coral Springs Charter School are currently in the works.
The A-rated school is located at 3205 N. University Drive, but the new school could be constructed on city-owned land near the Coral Springs Gymnasium and Coral Springs Police Department.
