Coral Glades High School sent all students home Thursday morning due to an ongoing power outage at the school, officials said.
Dr. Mark Kaplan, principal of the high school, announced on social media that the facility was operating on generator power because there was no electricity. Kaplan said the outages included air conditioning, internet, and the school’s phone system.
He later said all students were being released for the day starting at 9:30 a.m. and that bus riders would be able to take buses home for the early release.
School faculty learned of the outage at 5 a.m. Thursday.
The school’s generator wasn’t strong enough to power the air conditioning, Sullivan said. When students arrived, it was too hot to continue with the school day, given that it would take at least 6 hours for the power to come back on.
At this point, the district does not expect students will have to make up any additional time because of Thursday’s cancelation, Sullivan said.
Power at the school is expected to be back on Thursday night, he said.
