The city of Coral Springs officially declared May Jewish American Heritage Month on Wednesday, celebrating the immense contributions of Jewish Americans to the nation’s cultural and civic landscape.
City commission members presented the proclamation to Rabbi Laura Rappaport, rabbi of Temple Beth Orr in Coral Springs, and Rabbi Yankie Denburg, who leads Chabad Jewish Center of Coral Springs.
In brief remarks during the presentation, Denburg invoked the Israelite prophet Isaiah, who “told us that when God gave the Torah at Mount Sinai, he gave the Jews a mission, a destiny to be a light to the nations.
“And as Jews, we know that our job is not just an internal, spiritual journey for ourselves – we are part of the international, global community,” Denburg told the crowd at Wednesday’s commission meeting. “We’re deeply grateful to be part of a community that recognizes the Jewish community and helps us be a light with the nations, sharing the values and the ethics of one God … living a moral, meaningful, purposeful life together.”
At a time when Jews globally are facing a record surge in antisemitic acts and speech, the city vowed to fight Jew-hatred wherever it arises.
“We honor the timeless traditions, heritage, and contributions of Jewish Americans who drive our progress as a city, county, state, and nation,” said Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen. “The city of Coral Springs pledges to confront bigotry and antisemitism whenever and wherever it surfaces.”
Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook, who in his youth attended a New York City yeshiva – a Jewish school focused on religious studies – spoke movingly of his Judaism during the presentation.
“My faith is what drives me, supports me, and inspires me every day,” Brook said, recalling how he prayed every day and learned Hebrew at yeshiva. “I’m very grateful for my background, and I’m grateful for the commission honoring our month.”
Jewish American Heritage Month was first officially established in May 2006 by President George W. Bush.
Coral Springs’ proclamation marking the month recognizes Jewish American history as “a story of faith, fortitude and progress” that embodies core American values like religious freedom.
The honor acknowledges generations of Jewish immigrants who came to America “fleeing oppression, discrimination, and persecution in search of a better life for themselves and for their children …. [Jewish Americans] played indispensable roles in our nation’s civic and community life, making valuable contributions through their leadership and achievements.”
