Comcast employees across Florida marked the anniversary of Sept. 11 with a statewide volunteer effort, creating keepsakes from retired American flags to honor veterans and military families.
On Sept. 11, more than 110 employees gathered at 10 Comcast offices, including locations in Davie, Miami, Jacksonville, West Palm Beach, Tallahassee and Fort Myers, for the company’s Grommet Keepsake Project. Volunteers produced more than 270 mementos made with grommets from retired flags, which will be gifted to individuals whose flags Comcast has replaced through its Operation Old Glory program.
Operation Old Glory, launched in 2017, provides free replacements for worn or damaged American flags at homes and businesses across Florida. The program is open to everyone, regardless of whether they are Comcast customers.
“This day holds profound meaning. It is a time to honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all who have served and to remember that freedom is never free,” said Tammy Dunlop-Lyon, Comcast senior director of human resources and an Army National Guard veteran. “The Grommet Keepsake event is a meaningful way to carry forward the legacy of those who gave everything, and those who continue to serve.”
For many employees, the project offered a chance to reflect on the significance of 9/11 while paying tribute to veterans. Christine Diaz, a community account representative, said volunteering reminded her of being in New York during the attacks. “It’s nice to volunteer here. This is a way to show that we care,” she said.
Customer experience specialist Taquella White, who has military family ties, echoed the sentiment. “Doing anything red, white, and blue makes me feel closer to him,” she said. “It’s good for us to be here together and reflect on a day like 9/11 that was hard for everybody.”
Employees from across the state, including Jacksonville enterprise sales manager Christopher Munro, shared similar motivations. “Seeing firsthand the sacrifices that our servicemen and women make every day drives me to give back to organizations that pay homage to those commitments,” Munro said.
Carlos Botero, head of human resources for Comcast’s Florida region, praised the participation. “This initiative is a perfect example of what happens when employees come together with purpose. Team UP events like this reflect the very best of our united culture at Comcast,” he said.
Comcast said all flags used in Operation Old Glory are made in America and supplied by a veteran-owned business.
