Coral Springs commissioners are scheduled to vote Wednesday on whether to pay a contractor more than $3.4 million to build a new senior center as part of a major renovation of Kiwanis Park, city records show.
According to the records, the city-owned facility would double as a general community center under a city plan that aims to “satisfy the recreation and socialization needs of the growing population of senior citizens in Coral Springs” and other residents.
Commissioners will decide whether to award the construction contract to DiPompeo Construction Corp. of Pompano Beach, the lowest bidder among the five companies that sought the job.
The records state that senior citizens are increasingly using the city’s Senior Center at Sartory Hall, creating the need for an additional facility.
Under the city’s plan, the community center would be built at the site of the old fire station at 500 Ramblewood Dr. and require a partial demolition of that property.
Non-seniors will be able to take advantage of the new facility, too. The property is expected to include a new wooden sports floor for indoor sports, including pickleball and basketball; a new outdoor sports court; a renovated kitchen for cooking classes and demonstrations; and a large room for meetings, classes, and programs, according to city records.
Construction of the new community center will be funded with COVID-19 stimulus funds as well as city dollars, the records show.
The project is part of the city’s upgrading of nearby Kiwanis Park, where recently completed renovations include a new “nature-based playground” and pavilion, according to the city.
Future upgrades at the park will include a new, elevated boardwalk though a forested area, a perimeter pathway, and construction of a “learning garden,” records show.
