A 5th grader at Coral Springs Elementary recently won first place with an essay submission in the national “America’s Field Trip” contest.
Competing against thousands of students from across the country, Itamar J. (last name withheld) earned a first-place spot with his inspiring submission about what America means to him. As a reward, he was invited on an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of Yellowstone National Park, one of the country’s most iconic landmarks.
In his essay, Itamar wrote that America represents peace, freedom, security, and opportunity. His great-grandparents, Holocaust survivors who lost everything, found in America a chance to rebuild their lives with hope and dignity.
Unlike them, who had to hide their Jewish identity, he wrote that he feels proud to openly identify as an American Jew, grateful to call America his home.
The America’s Field Trip contest, organized by America250, invites students in grades 3-12 to express what America means through creative writing, artwork, or other forms of expression.
America250, co-chaired by Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, is a nonpartisan group charged by Congress with planning the United States’s 250th anniversary.
The contest is open to students nationwide for the 2024-2025 school year. Winners can participate in behind-the-scenes tours of iconic American historical sites, including an exclusive private tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the 2025 winners. Submissions are being accepted now through April 16, 2025.
