Coral Springs Police major and SWAT team commander Nicholas Mazzei graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., on Friday, authorities said.
Mazzei, who directs CSPD’s Special Operations Component, graduated as a member of the 291st session of the FBI’s National Academy – an honor bestowed upon fewer than one percent of law enforcement officers in the U.S., according to Coral Springs city officials.
As part of his studies at the academy, Mazzei underwent ten weeks of training in advanced communication, leadership, and fitness. According to the city, participants in the FBI program have an average of 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.
Mazzei, who joined CSPD in 2001, oversees the training and readiness of the department’s SWAT team and its 48 members.
“I want to congratulate Major Nick Mazzei on this achievement and looking forward to what he will be able accomplish in the future,” CSPD Chief Bradley McKeone said in a written statement Monday.
Mazzei, a Coral Springs resident since 1985, worked as a CSPD road patrol officer for four years starting in 2001. In 2005, he became a detective in the Vice, Intelligence, and Narcotics Unit and was promoted to sergeant in 2009.
During his tenure as a sergeant, Mazzei supervised the Road Patrol, Bicycle, Street Intelligence Units, and CSPD’s Strategic Enforcement Team. In 2018, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and supervised a road patrol platoon until 2020.
Mazzei next became an operational support lieutenant, overseeing multiple projects and helping develop CSPD’s high-tech Real Time Crime Center.
A SWAT team member since 2002, Mazzei was recognized as the Broward County Officer of the Year in 2007, among other honors.
The major holds an undergraduate degree from Florida Atlantic University and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University, according to the city.
