Coral Springs Charter softball added another commitment, with Giovanna Gurgel heading to Belmont University.
She committed only months after her brother, Enzo Gurgel, committed to play college baseball at La Salle University.
“It feels amazing to reach this goal of committing to an amazing division one school,” Giovanna said. “I felt that the coaches were amazing, and they made me feel like family at my visit. And I also want to major in architecture, and they’re a great school for this major.”
Giovanna started playing softball when she was six and played for the Explosion, Gold Coast, Athletic Mercado and Bombers, and Rock Gold Premiere.
After missing her freshman season with an injury, Giovanna shined during her sophomore year, leading the Panthers to a deep run in the postseason following 26 wins. She hit .429 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs.
“Gio has a big-time bat, which will play at the next level,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “She has immense power and elite bat-to-ball skills. On top of those tangibles, she’s a phenomenal teammate.”
Still, with two years left before college, Giovanna hopes to be more adaptive at the plate against strategic pitchers and be more aggressive with her throw-downs. Belmont went 30-20 last year before falling in the MVC Championship.
