As July begins, we prepare to celebrate our nation’s 244th birthday. The 4th of July, or Independence Day, holds a special meaning for me. It is a day when we established a country with a set of laws that were created “BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE.” By doing so, we created what I believe is the greatest nation in the world.
We have had our struggles as a country, but holding on to our core values has helped us to overcome those struggles. One of those core beliefs is the ability to “agree to disagree.” Recently we have seen national and local protests.
As the Chief of Police and as a police officer, I am willing to lay down my life to defend your right to free speech and assembly. These rights are guaranteed to you in our Constitution. I am very pleased to say that the demonstrations we had locally were very peaceful and well organized. In many instances, the organizers and our police officers worked together to ensure a peaceful, well-planned event. This also provided opportunities for the organizers and police officers to talk, share opinions, come to some understandings, and agree to disagree in a respectful manner.
I look forward to continuing these important discussions.
In Florida, our COVID-19 numbers continue to climb. We have seen a rise in our cases locally as well. I, like many of you, am looking forward to the end of this pandemic, but it is imperative that we all work together to help eradicate this virus. The best thing you can do to protect each other is to wear face coverings and practice social distancing. These two important measures drastically reduce your chances of contracting and/or spreading the virus.
I want to thank all the hospital workers who are working hard to care for our sick. We will continue to support them and any efforts to combat this virus.
With the summer comes Hurricane Season. Experience has taught us that the best thing to do before a hurricane is prepare! I strongly encourage everyone to prepare now before a hurricane is off our coast. Our department continues to prepare by working closely with state and federal partners to improve our response to these storms.
We also continue to utilize technology to help keep our citizens informed. Last year, we utilized social media and live streams from our Emergency Operations Center to ensure residents knew about power outages, curfews, and traffic concerns. During this Independence Day and throughout July, I hope we continue to focus on what unites us rather than divides us. I wish you all a Happy Independence Day and encourage you all to look out for each other and be safe.
