The Coral Springs city commission is set to vote Wednesday on a $1.5 million contract to continue planning efforts at Tom Messenheimer Field, part of a broader look at how the city’s Sportsplex could be optimized in the future, according to city records.
Commissioners will consider approving an amendment to an existing contract with Sports Facilities Development of Clearwater, Fl. The proposed award totals $1,505,000 and would bring the overall contract’s value to $1,795,500, the records show.
The Parks and Recreation Department says it is seeking a master plan to better utilize Tom Messenheimer Field, which is located on Royal Palm Boulevard next to the city’s tennis center and aquatic complex. City officials are also conducting a broader evaluation of the Sportsplex area and how its facilities might be improved or expanded over time.
Sports Facilities Development has already completed earlier phases of planning linked to the Sportsplex. In June 2024, the city commission awarded the firm an initial contract that included an optimization report, concept planning services, cost exercises, and a feasibility study involving building plans for the area’s sports facilities. In March 2025, commissioners approved a second phase to develop schematic designs and construction cost estimates.
If approved, Sports Facilities Development would serve as the city’s representative as Coral Springs seeks architectural, engineering, and construction firms for related development. The firm would also provide project management services during the design and construction process.
The work at Tom Messenheimer Field is tied to broader discussions among city leaders about the future of the Coral Springs Sportsplex. A recently presented city study outlined a range of conceptual options — from more modest upgrades to large-scale redevelopment scenarios — examining how the Sportsplex could eventually support expanded recreation and larger athletic events.
City staff from the Parks and Recreation Department and the Purchasing Division are recommending approval of the contract.
