Logan Priest, Ariana Blanc, and Amar Shatila {Craft Guild}
The Coral Springs Craft Guild awarded $2,000 in scholarships to three local high school seniors recognized for their artistic talent and creativity.
Guild members reviewed submissions during judging on April 22, selecting winners from a variety of artistic disciplines, including costume design, ceramics, digital art, and painting. The organization said it has awarded more than $73,000 in scholarships since 1984.
Logan Priest, a Coral Springs resident and student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, earned first place and a $1,000 scholarship. Priest submitted a life-size Ursula costume inspired by “The Little Mermaid,” created using found materials such as bottle caps, shells, pearls, fabric, and wire mesh. He also submitted a ceramic alligator sculpture and a detailed costume board.
According to the Craft Guild, Priest has received superior ratings for costume designs inspired by “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “The Lion King,” and was recognized in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards fashion category. He plans to attend the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music to study theater design and costume technology.
Second place and a $500 scholarship went to Ariana Blanc of Parkland, also a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Blanc submitted acrylic paintings and digital artwork, including portraits of pets and a self-portrait featuring her twin brother.
Blanc plans to attend the University of Central Florida to pursue a nursing degree. The Guild noted that she is also a standout wrestler who has earned All-American honors and placed in state and district championships.
The third-place recipient of the $500 Sky Belcher Memorial Scholarship was Amar Shatila of Coral Springs Charter School. Shatila submitted acrylic paintings inspired by song lyrics and emotional self-portraits.
Shatila, who also performs percussion for Coral Springs Charter bands, plans to attend the University of Central Florida to study studio art and pursue a career in concept design.
The Coral Springs Craft Guild, a nonprofit organization founded nearly 50 years ago, supports local charitable initiatives and raises scholarship funds through raffles, donations, and its annual Craft Show and Holiday Boutique.
This year’s event is scheduled for Oct. 2-3 at La Quinta Inn and Suites in Coral Springs.
