Coral Springs High School Football Looking For New Coach Weeks Before 1st Game

The Coral Springs High School football team is less than two weeks away from beginning its season but will be searching for a new head coach following the departure of Travis Shelton.

Shelton announced his departure on Instagram after taking over the program in February. He worked with the Colts throughout the spring and summer but will leave before coaching his first official game.

“Some chapters don’t end because you quit… they end because your assignment is complete,” Shelton wrote. “A fire was lit under my watch, and you young men made me proud.”

Shelton also thanked the players for trusting him during his brief time leading the program.

“To every young man I had the privilege to coach, thank you for trusting me,” Shelton wrote. “You didn’t just become better football players; you became brothers. I never saw jerseys… I saw future fathers, husbands, leaders, and men with purpose.”

Along with leading the football program, Shelton coached the Colts’ girls’ flag football team. He starred at South Plantation High School before playing college football at Temple University, where he led the nation in all-purpose yards.

After going undrafted, Shelton signed with the Denver Broncos in 2009 and also played professionally in the Canadian Football League and United Football League. He later pursued a professional boxing career, going undefeated, and also coached a unified world champion. Shelton previously returned to his alma mater, South Plantation High School, as a coach and helped the program win a state championship over his two years there.

Coral Springs has yet to announce Shelton’s replacement as the Colts prepare for their first season competing in an independent conference. The Colts are scheduled to open the season on Thursday, Aug. 20, against Pembroke Pines Charter.
