Coral Springs High Showcases Aviation, Trades, and Student Life at Freshman Orientation

Annette Dumas is looking forward to the first day of school at Coral Springs High.
She will be introducing an Innovation Course teaching aerospace technology and mechanics. Dumas also teaches basic construction skills.
"I will be showing students how to tear apart and rebuild aircraft engines. This three-year program will be highly hands-on, and students will learn to use power tools. This program will prepare students to pursue careers in the aviation industry," said Dumas.
Students who want to pursue careers in construction can take her carpentry courses, where they learn to build walls, work with plumbing, and understand the basics of an electrician's work. "There are some good opportunities for people with construction skills," said Dumas.

She was among a group of teachers and coaches who presented their programs during an orientation day for new students at Coral Springs on July 31. Many of the varsity teams and after-school clubs set up tables in the gym and encouraged students to consider joining. Incoming ninth graders could tour the school, and principal Dwayne Dixon welcomed them to campus.
Coral Springs students can also study aviation through the Air Force JROTC program. They will have access to a flight simulator and can learn to fly drones, ultimately pursuing FAA certification. Many of the JROTC cadets will participate in the Raiders program, where they will compete against other schools in the 5K, rope bridge, and other physical challenges, according to Raul Linares, a JROTC instructor.
The drama club participated in the event, and Barbara Krantz, who directs the club's plays, said the members are excited about the upcoming year and will participate in a district competition in November.

"We want our incoming freshmen to learn about the culture of Coral Springs and see the opportunities our school offers," said Dixon.
