The wrestling program at Coral Springs High School has a long-standing tradition of excellence, with many district and regional championships won by the Colts’ wrestlers over the years.
Coach Dan Jacob said this year’s team is young and has struggled. On December 9, the Colts competed at the Santaluces High School Christmas tournament, which included 32 teams. The Coral Springs Boys’ team earned 13th place. The girls who competed did very well. Vanessa Alexandre, who wrestles in the 155-pound category, won first place. Ahreanna Bryan, who wrestles at 190 pounds, earned second place.
“We have a young team with seven first-year wrestlers,” said Coach Dan Jacob. “Because of some problems with the wrestling room, we have to practice in the school cafeteria. We will improve and win later in the season.”
Some of the boys on the team did well. Shai Keery, who wrestles at 175 pounds, earned fourth place. J’vier Romeus, who wrestles at 190 pounds earned sixth place and Jaylan Brown, who wrestles at 157 pounds took sixth place.
“It takes determination and dedication to do well in wrestling. During a competition, you are on your own,” said Brown.
Keery said the demanding wrestling workouts are beneficial. “I have become a better person because of hard wrestling practices,” he said.
The Colts are 2-1 in duel meets. They beat Flanagan and Plantation but lost to Fort Lauderdale. The Colts will host a large meet in January.
The Coral Springs wrestling team is one of the strongest in the Coral Springs area. The wrestlers are going through demanding workouts and gaining the skills necessary for success later in the season. Coach Jacob has earned a reputation for producing a top-notch wrestling program. He has also hosted many wrestling tournaments over the years.
