A Coral Springs man was arrested after allegedly shooting another man in the shoulder while firing into a Jeep occupied by the victim and his son during a confrontation, police said.
Both victims were transported to Broward Health Coral Springs following Wednesday’s shooting, which happened shortly after 3 p.m. The adult victim suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, according to a Coral Springs Police Department probable cause affidavit.
Christopher Jacob Smith, 57, was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, shooting at or into an occupied vehicle, armed burglary of a conveyance, and child abuse.
Police said the victim and his son had gone to a residence to check on a woman when they saw Smith near a black Ram pickup truck.
According to the affidavit, Smith stepped into the roadway as the victim tried to park and claimed his foot was trapped beneath one of the Jeep’s tires. When the victim tried to reverse, Smith allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired toward the Jeep.
The victim got out and ran, and police said Smith continued firing shots as he fled. The son, who had been seated in the front passenger seat, also got out and called 911.
The woman told investigators Smith had become increasingly jealous of her relationship with the victim and had demanded that she choose between them, the affidavit states. She also said Smith had retrieved a handgun from his pickup truck before the confrontation.
Investigators found spent shell casings and bullet impact damage to the Jeep, including evidence of a gunshot to the driver’s seat. Nearby surveillance video and witness statements also supported the victims’ accounts, police said.
Officers detained Smith near the scene and recovered a Glock 9mm handgun from him, police said. He was taken to the Broward Main Jail. Bond information for his case was not immediately available.
