A Coral Springs man was arrested for grand theft auto, drug charges, and fleeing the scene of an accident after crashing a stolen vehicle while fleeing from police outside of a Coral Springs Wawa.
On November 29, Coral Springs Police responded to a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle outside the Wawa gas station at 7305 West Sample Road.
The caller told police that the man, later identified as Nathan Couture, 25, Coral Springs, was sitting inside a vehicle drinking an unknown substance and acting “strange.” After police ran the car’s tags, the vehicle came up as a recently stolen red Toyota pickup truck.
According to the report, officers observed Couture, who matched the description of a white heavy-set male the caller had provided, sitting on the truck’s hood. They immediately turned on their patrol lights behind his vehicle and asked him to show his hands.
The report stated Couture jumped off the truck’s hood, entered the driver’s seat, and started reaching for an unknown object. Officers loudly demanded Couture exit the vehicle and surrender, but he refused and eventually started the vehicle and attempted to reverse.
With police cruisers blocking his path backward, Couture drove the stolen truck over a curb forward, through grass, and eventually, directly into a palm tree. The crash had so much force that it disabled his vehicle.
Even after the crash, Couture continued to resist arrest. After an attempt to drive the disabled truck, he exited the truck and fled on foot. The report stated after a brief foot chase, officers were able to apprehend Couture after shooting him with a taser gun.
While in custody, further investigation revealed Couture had stolen the vehicle he was driving that same day in Fort Lauderdale. A search of the truck revealed a clear glass pipe and copper-colored wire, consistent with drug paraphernalia used to smoke crack cocaine or fentanyl.
Couture admitted to officers that he had taken two caplets of fentanyl. Once in custody, officers also learned Couture was on probation for previous grand theft and burglary charges.
Couture was placed under arrest and faces 17 charges. He is being held with no bond at this time at the North Broward Bureau.
