A Coral Springs man faces an attempted murder charge after police say he tried to beat his mother to death with a frying pan before attempting to smother her.
According to an arrest report, Keith Evan Woodward, 53, told officers he “intended to kill his mother due to her early dementia and need for constant assistance.”
Court records list Woodward as living near the 10300 block of Northwest 29th Street, though the exact location of the incident was redacted.
CSPD investigators said the attack happened on December 8 while Woodward and his mother were searching for a caretaker’s phone number. Coral Springs Police detectives wrote that Woodward armed himself with a large frying pan, walked into his mother’s bedroom as she lay on the bed, and struck her in the head “in an attempt to kill her.”
According to the report, Woodward climbed on top of his mother and tried to smother her with pillows while she pushed, pinched, and repeatedly yelled that she couldn’t breathe.
Investigators said he hit her at least two more times with the frying pan before trying again to smother her.
Detectives wrote that the woman was able to escape by sliding out from under her son, falling to the floor, and fleeing the room. Police said she ran out through a garage door with Woodward chasing her, but he stopped once she was outside.
According to the report, Woodward later told dispatchers he was “going to hell” for what he had done.
Medics took the woman to Broward Health Coral Springs. Police said she was alert and conscious but suffered “severe bruising,” and the full extent of her injuries had not yet been determined.
Woodward was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was ordered held without bond. A judge also ordered that he undergo a mental health evaluation and have no contact with his mother.
