The City of Coral Springs is recognizing Autism Acceptance Month with a series of events, programs, and sensory-friendly initiatives to promote inclusivity, education, and support for individuals of all abilities.
The monthlong observance features several community events designed to provide safe, engaging environments for residents with special needs and their families.
A sensory-friendly Touch-A-Truck event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mullins Hall, 10150 NW 29th St. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore city vehicles and meet first responders, including police officers, firefighters, and utility workers. Families can also register loved ones for the city’s Special Needs Database to assist first responders during emergencies.
The Saturday Social Club will take place on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Senior Center at Sartory Hall. Designed for individuals ages 10 and older with unique physical and mental needs, the program includes a guided tour and workshop at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, along with interactive activities. The cost is $15 per participant.
A Sensory Walk is planned for Sunday, April 26, at 9 a.m. at Cypress Hammock Park, 1300 Coral Springs Drive. Participants of all ages and abilities are invited to experience interactive sensory stations focused on relaxation, concentration, and connection with nature. Take-home sensory bags will be provided.
In addition to the events, the Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive, offers sensory kits for guests with sensory sensitivities. The kits include noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads. Visitors may request a kit at the front desk. The kits are provided through a partnership with KultureCity, a nonprofit organization focused on accessibility and inclusion.
