A group of local girls will soon experience a day unlike any other, filled with physical challenges, teamwork, and inspiration, as they step into the shoes of firefighters.
The Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department will host a special empowerment camp called Ignite the Flame on October 14, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Coral Springs Regional Institute of Public Safety, 4180 NW 120th Avenue.
This free, one-day camp offers 36 middle school girls in grades 6-8 an extraordinary opportunity to gain insight into the fire service and build confidence.
Designed to inspire, the event will give these young women hands-on experience with actual firefighting tasks while empowering them through teamwork and skill-building activities.
Ignite the Flame is more than just a day of fun and education—it’s about igniting confidence, fostering leadership, and showing these girls what they’re truly capable of. This year’s camp is particularly special as female firefighters from across South Florida will be participating as counselors, providing not only guidance but also powerful role models for the girls.
Throughout the day, participants will engage in physical activities and challenges that simulate the work of a firefighter. From handling fire hoses and controlling water flow to mastering search and rescue operations, the girls will learn crucial firefighting skills under the guidance of experienced professionals. They’ll also get a taste of advanced techniques, such as climbing and rappelling, and gain exposure to vital elements of the profession, like ventilation and forcible entry.
Fitness training, an essential part of firefighting, is also a key camp component. Campers will work on building their physical strength and endurance, learning firsthand the level of fitness required for the demanding job of a firefighter.
According to Public Safety Marketing Manager Ryan Himmel, the heart of Ignite the Flame goes beyond the skills—it’s about nurturing self-confidence. The camp provides a supportive environment that encourages each girl to discover her potential and push past her limits, both during the camp and long after. The lessons learned here are meant to empower these young women not only to envision themselves in roles of leadership and strength but also to carry that mindset into their everyday lives.
The camp is free, making it accessible to all girls in the community, regardless of socio-economic background.
