Coral Glades athletic department officially announced Marc Lyon as the new head coach of the boy's varsity soccer team.
Lyon takes over for Coach Chris Hawley after two terrific seasons. In 2004, Lyon was part of the first varsity soccer team at Coral Glades and eventually graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas in 2007.
"This school means so much to me, and I'm trying to build something that will be an attractive destination for kids in the zone that want the opportunity to play for a powerhouse program in Coral Springs."
Lyons played college soccer for a season at Florida International University, was an All-Conference nominee, and then went on to play professionally with Miami FC before injuries started derailing his career. That led him to coach, where he began at Real Madrid Miami as the 15U boys and 14U girls coach. Lyon also coached at Planation FC and, most recently, for Sunrise Prime.
"We’re excited to have Coach Lyon return home," said Athletic Director Kristin Garcia. "I think it is extremely special to have one of our inaugural players come back, and I know our players are excited to get going."
Currently, Lyons, who resides in Tamarac, is working as a personal trainer at Athletes Performance Training in Coconut Creek. He takes over for a team that has made the Regional Finals in back-to-back seasons. The Jaguars won eight games in 2020 before falling to Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the District Final. However, they got their revenge in penalty kicks last season in the District Semifinals for one of the team's six wins.
"I saw a couple of games last year, and I'm just hoping to be an expansive coach and work with individuals while building his freshmen class to a senior class," Lyon added.
While Coral Glades had nine student-athletes graduate, they not only brought back some talented players but will also elevate several players from the junior varsity team. The Jaguars are set to begin their season in October.
