Coral Glades boys soccer won only four games during the regular season but picked up their biggest win in years after stunning Marjory Stoneman Douglas in penalty kicks.
After the game was scoreless through regulation and two overtimes, Julian Gil, Samir Dominguez, and Sam Ribeiro scored goals in PK’S, while goaltender Simon Utrera stopped three shots from recording another shutout.
“This wins means a lot,” said Head Coach Chris Hawley. “Especially after losing last year in double overtime to Douglas, it felt great to flip the script and pull out a victory in penalty kicks this year. We played hard both playoff games so far, and the kids really deserved this win.”
This was the third straight season that the teams faced off in the District Playoffs as both schools split the previous matchups. MSD won 3-0 in their lone meeting in the regular season.
However, their magical run ended in the finals following their 1-0 loss to Monarch High School. Still, the Jaguars will wait to see if they will have a chance to compete in Regionals after their terrific run. Coral Glades should know by Sunday night their next opponent if they are to qualify.
