Garrett Ewald {BSO}
A Coral Springs man is facing a series of felony charges after investigators say he used multiple social media accounts to collect and trade child sexual abuse material, with authorities linking him to more than one hundred explicit files involving minors.
According to records, Garrett Ewald, 35, was arrested on November 21 after Coral Springs Police and members of the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force concluded a months-long investigation that began when four separate CyberTip reports were filed with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The tips were submitted by Snapchat and Discord, which reported that a user had uploaded child pornography through several different accounts. Detectives allege that the accounts were tied to Ewald through subscriber information, recovery emails, phone numbers, and internet records.
According to police, the uploads were traced to an IP address registered to a residence on Northwest 89th Drive in Coral Springs, where Ewald and family members live.
Search warrants were executed on two Snapchat accounts and one Discord account believed to belong to Ewald. Detectives reported finding approximately 112 unique files of child sexual abuse material and at least 167 additional files of various types.
The affidavit states that some victims appeared to be as young as two years old. Investigators also recovered chat logs in which Ewald allegedly solicited and traded what he called CP with other users and bragged about possessing material involving extremely young children.
Police say the chats also showed Ewald communicating with multiple juveniles and attempting to obtain sexually explicit images from them.
According to the affidavit, detectives learned Ewald had recently moved to Nashville for work but regularly traveled back to Coral Springs. After learning he was in town, officers conducted surveillance at the residence and stopped his vehicle near University Drive and the Sawgrass Expressway.
Records indicate Ewald did not wish to speak to officers about the allegations, and that during his arrest, his cellphone was recovered, which is currently being reviewed to check for additional illegal files.
Ewald was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
