Stephen Bowen {BSO}
Coral Springs Police have formally charged Stephen Bowen, the husband of slain Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, with premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, according to jail records.
Bowen, 40, was being held without bond Thursday in the Broward County Main Jail.
The charges against the accused killer come one day after authorities confirmed that the 38-year-old vice mayor was found dead inside her Coral Springs home in what investigators described as a domestic violence-related homicide.
During a Wednesday evening press conference, Coral Springs Police Chief Brad Mock said officers conducted a welfare check around 10 a.m. that led them to the couple’s residence in the 800 block of Northwest 127th Avenue. Inside, officers discovered the body of a deceased woman, later identified as Metayer Bowen.
Earlier information released by authorities indicated that Metayer Bowen had been shot inside the home.
Police quickly identified Stephen Bowen as the suspect. He was taken into custody in Plantation later that day. Officials have said there are no additional suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed details about a motive, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The Coral Springs Police Department Crimes Against Persons Unit (CAPS) is actively investigating the incident and encourages anyone with information to contact Detective Daniel Powers at 954-346-1223 or dpowers@coralsprings.gov.
