The City of Coral Springs announced the addition of a manager who will oversee its green efforts.
Monica Ospina was hired to form and propose a Sustainability Action Plan as part of the new Office of Sustainability.
Ospina brings knowledge and experience that will enhance sustainability efforts throughout Coral Springs, according to a press release.
“We are committed to ensuring the city remains on track with its strategic priorities, one of which is the creation of an Office of Sustainability, ” said City Manager Catherine Givens, who oversees Budget, Strategy, and Sustainability.
To meet their priority, Givens said it was paramount to hire the best and brightest in the field and identify someone who is committed to the city’s vision and core values to engage with the community.
“We found that in Monica, and we are excited to have her lead the city’s sustainability efforts,” she said.
Her award-winning strategies and planning have been nationally recognized and applauded by experts in the field, according to a press release from the city.
Before joining the city, Ospina worked for Broward County’s Air Program as the Environmental Planning and Outreach Coordinator, leading team outreach initiatives. She focused on community engagement, communications, social media strategies, government operations, greenhouse gas emissions inventories, spatial analysis, review of land use amendments, and data analysis.
She was the first to receive a National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for her work in the Environmental Engineering and Permitting Division of Broward County and is part of the Women in GIS group. In addition to NACo recognition, she received the American Society of Landscape Architects Award of Honor.
Ospina earned a bachelor’s of science in Biological Sciences and Environmental Sciences from Florida International University. Additionally, she received a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from North Carolina State University.
