The kindergarten students at Park Springs Elementary School in Coral Springs are learning about plants, gardening, and working together.
The school created the “Kinder Garden” program, in which the school’s seven kindergarten classes plant and nurture various plants, such as herbs, tomatoes, fruits, and strawberries, in four garden beds.
According to Patricia Fraschetti, the kindergarten teacher at Park Springs who is leading the project, the children work together to maintain and water the plants. She developed a love for gardening through a similar project when she was a fourth-grade student at Tradewinds Elementary School.
The school raised $550 from the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization and $1,700 from DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding source. They began planting the garden on February 21.
“The kindergartners are learning about plants, how to respect each other and work together. They are developing social-emotional skills,” said Fraschetti.
Eventually, the kids will harvest their crops and enjoy tasting the fruits of their labor.
Park Springs Elementary is located at 5800 Northwest 66 Terrace.
