Coral Springs Charter Softball. {CSC Softball}
One of the most dominant softball programs in the state for much of the last decade is at it again, with Coral Springs Charter having an incredible season.
The Panthers enter spring break with a 10-1 record and rank fifth in the state. They have allowed only 11 runs all year, with four of them coming in their only loss this year against nationally ranked Park Vista High School.
“Our pitching has been fabulous, as usual,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “When they bring their A game, we can compete with anyone. Offensively, we have been improving. It’s hard to maintain an offense like we’ve had in the past when you lose so many student-athletes to injury, graduation, and St Thomas Aquinas.”
CSC’s first win of the season came against Oxbridge Academy. They went on to beat Archbishop McCarthy and Somerset Academy before losing against the Cobras. They have currently won seven straight games, with wins over Coral Reef, North Fort Myers, Monarch, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, West Broward, Western, and West Boca Raton High School.
Sophia Bertorelli and Courtney Wahlbrink have pitched in 10 games this year and have five wins. Bertorelli has struck out 59 batters in 30 innings, while Wahlbrink has 56 strikeouts in 33 innings. Gia Schirripa and Emma Ruiz have all pitched as well.
The offense has improved lately, with Addi Michel leading the team with a .667 average. Gio Gurgel and Cameron Thiele are each hitting well over .400, while Heather Robertson is right at that mark. Wahlbrink, Addi Brown, Shelby Stephens and Bree Martineli all are hitting over .300.
The Panthers have hit five home runs this year, with Gurgel connecting for three of them. Brown and Robertson each have one, with Robertson also leading the team in RBIs with 16, followed by Brown, Gurgel, and Wahlbrink.
CSC will be back in action for their next game on Monday, April 1, against Cypress Bay High School at 6 p.m. They will then play three games in the Kissimmee Klassic, featuring the preseason number one team in the nation, Orange Beach High School from Alabama. They will close the regular season with matchups against Dwyer, Pembroke Pines Charter, and Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School.
