Despite uncertainty surrounding the program in recent weeks, the Coral Springs High School football team will take the field this season, with Kevin Smith taking over as the Colts’ new head coach.
The Colts will forfeit their first two scheduled games against Pembroke Pines Charter and Forest Hill High School before taking the field for the first time on Thursday, September 3 against Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
The decision comes amid a late coaching change for Coral Springs following the departure of Travis Shelton, who was hired in February and worked with the program throughout the spring and summer before departing in August.
Smith brings experience as a former collegiate player, along with coaching experience at the youth, high school and collegiate levels. He was an All-Conference player at Santa Ana College and has also been recognized for his work as a coach, including earning Coach of the Year honors with Pembroke Pines Optimist.
“We are excited about the leadership, structure, and player-development mindset Coach Smith brings to Coral Springs High School,” Athletic Director Jasmine Leger said. “Right now, our focus is continuing to rebuild the program, develop our student-athletes, and move the football program in a positive direction.”
The Colts will now turn their attention toward getting back on the field and continuing preparations for the 2026 season under their new head coach.
Following its game against Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Coral Springs will play road games at Hallandale and South Broward High School before its bye week. The Colts will return in October for home matchups against Cooper City and Hollywood Hills High School before closing out the regular season with three consecutive road games against Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs Charter and J.P. Taravella.
