Students with a passion for wildlife and leadership have a unique opportunity this summer as the Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital launches its EcoLeaders Summer Docent Program.
Designed for students entering grades 10 through 12 in fall 2026, the four-week program offers hands-on experience in environmental education, public speaking, and leadership development—all while working closely with Florida’s native wildlife and ecosystems.
Participants will complete up to 96 volunteer hours during the program, gaining real-world experience by guiding guests, leading activities, and assisting with daily operations at the nature center. Organizers say the initiative is ideal for students interested in conservation, education, or community engagement.
In addition to practical experience, students will take part in leadership discussions, develop public speaking skills, and learn basic data collection and analysis. The program fee has also been waived for 2026, making the opportunity more accessible to interested applicants.
Program coordinators are seeking energetic, responsible students who are comfortable speaking to the public, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and willing to spend time outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Two sessions are available:
- Session 1: June 9 through July 3, 2026
- Session 2: July 7 through July 31, 2026
All accepted participants must attend a mandatory orientation and training session scheduled for June 6 at 11 a.m.
Applications are currently open online, and selected students will be invited to interview as part of the selection process. More information and the application can be found here: Apply for the EcoLeaders Program.
