Thousands of students in Broward County will soon have new opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) as FPL announces the winners of its expanded Classroom Makeover Grant program, with Sawgrass Springs Middle School in Coral Springs among the recipients.
In celebration of its centennial year, FPL has quadrupled its STEM Classroom Makeover Grant program, awarding $1 million to 20 schools across Florida, up from five grants in previous years. Sawgrass Springs Middle School will receive $50,000 to redesign and transform its classroom into a state-of-the-art learning environment designed to ignite a passion for STEM among students.
Hallandale Magnet High School in Hallandale Beach also earned a $50,000 grant through the program.
“We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of Sawgrass Springs Middle and Hallandale Magnet High School,” said James A. Knapp, President & CEO of Broward Education Foundation. “Thanks to FPL’s generous investment in STEM education, students across Broward County are empowered with the tools and inspiration they need to dream big, explore boldly, and build a brighter future.”
Each winning school will have one year to revitalize its classroom, adding cutting-edge technology such as virtual reality equipment, 3D printers, robotics kits, and interactive displays. The goal is to create dynamic spaces that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills among students.
“At FPL, we believe in the power of education and the endless possibilities that STEM learning can unlock for students,” said Pam Rauch, FPL Vice President of External Affairs and Economic Development. “We strongly believe that STEM education is the cornerstone of a prosperous future, and these grants will serve as a catalyst for fostering innovation, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our communities.”
Now in its fourth year, FPL’s STEM Classroom Makeover Grant program, funded through its charitable arm the NextEra Energy Foundation, focuses on supporting K-12 Title 1 public, charter, or private schools, or schools with at least 40% economically disadvantaged students. The grants help provide technology and resources that advance STEM curricula and increase career exposure for diverse student populations.
Previous winners from Broward County include Cypress Run Education Center in Pompano Beach, Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, and Lauderdale Lakes Middle School in Lauderdale Lakes.
