Coral Glades had an impressive week to begin the spring sports season with a rivalry game in lacrosse and a walk-off win in softball.
The high school lacrosse season officially got underway as Coral Glades High School and Coral Springs High School squared off to open the year on the boys’ side. Nicholas Insua scored three goals to lead the Jaguars, while Emmanuele Franchini recorded two goals and Mauricio Lejo added a goal and an assist. Dillan Boyyea made 15 saves in net and also picked up an assist in a strong all-around performance. The Jaguars, however, dropped their next two games, losing 8-3 to Cooper City High School and 15-1 to Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
Coral Springs High School is coming off a 6-5 season and will look to build early momentum when they host Cypress Bay High School on Tuesday, February 17, at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Coral Springs High School returned to action Thursday against Cooper City High School but fell to 0-2 to start the season. The Colts, who won two games last year, will look to bounce back when they face Coral Glades in a rematch on February 23.
On the girls’ side, Coral Glades opened the season with a 9-7 win over Cooper City High School. The Lady Jaguars battled through a back-and-forth contest and scored a pair of late goals to secure their first victory of the year. After winning three games last season, Coral Glades will next take on Cypress Bay High School on Tuesday, February 17, at 5 p.m.
The Coral Glades softball team won its first game of the South Florida Challenge Preseason Classic in dramatic fashion, defeating Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School on a walk-off hit. The Jaguars scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead and added three more in the fourth to go ahead 6-1. However, the final two innings proved costly as Coral Glades allowed two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to tie the game.
Cameron Marques delivered the decisive moment, hitting a walk-off single to lift the Lady Jaguars to a 7-6 victory. Domiquete Soto drove in two runs, while Jordin Sharpen and Rylee Mello each recorded an RBI. Haleigh Thomas made the start in the circle, allowing just one run over four innings. Marques pitched in relief and was credited with the win despite allowing four earned runs.
Coral Glades followed with a 1-1 tie against Westminster Academy a day later. Brianna Escobar recorded an RBI single in the first inning for the Jaguars’ lone run, while Addison Schwartzberg allowed only one run in the fourth inning. She finished with eight strikeouts, and five different players recorded hits in the game.
The Jaguars won 10 games last season and will open the regular season against West Broward High School on Tuesday, February 17, at 5:30 p.m. The Bobcats outscored their opponents 24-3 in two preseason victories after finishing 18-8 last year. Coral Glades lost 10-0 in the team’s only head-to-head matchup last season.
