Coral Glades had a busy week, with two teams competing in the playoffs and another commitment in softball.
Golf star Bianca Gibbs completes her incredible high school golf career with a trip to the State Championship, and placed eighth after shooting a 73 and 74 at Mission Inn Resort in Howie in the Hills. Gibbs said she had an amazing experience playing her senior year and says it was bittersweet to be playing her final few rounds.
“On day two of states, I was thinking that this was the last time I would tee off representing Coral Glades,” Gibbs said. “I want to thank those who supported me on and off the course these past two years.”
During the first day of the tournament, Gibbs birdied three holes and then got a par on 17 of the 18 holes in the second round.
“Bianca’s will, her spirit, and tenacity never cease to amaze me,” Head Coach Tim Deeleeuw said. “She showed a fortitude through the freezing weather on Veterans’ Day that would make any American hero proud. I have such gratitude for being able to play a part in her story.”
The swim team featured Ethan Persten competing at the state championship, and after winning two events at Districts and placing third in the 100-yard freestyle at Regionals, came in 12th at the State Championship in Ocala on Saturday. He also swam in the 400-yard freestyle with Miguel Monreira, Benjamin Denevi and Galen Tortorella, finishing in 16th place.
The football team’s season came to a close after falling in the opening round of the playoffs. The Jaguars, who went 6-4 in the regular season, were seeded eighth and faced top-seeded Miami Palmetto Senior High School in the first round, losing 42-0 on Thursday.
The Jaguars, though, finished the season as the top team in Coral Springs, beating Coral Springs Charter, J.P. Taravella, and Coral Springs High School, and also securing wins over Stranahan, Hallandale, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
Coral Glades will return a talented group of players next season, but will have Edward Burns, Anthony Casseus, Ethan Claire, Antwan Clark, Tyler Coury, Jadyn Dantinour, Avery Evans, Lens Honore, Daniel Jackson, Joseph Kogan, Nevin Rivera, Jordan Roberts, Elijah Shelton, Romero Williams, and Sam Zayed all graduate.
The softball team has another player who has officially committed, Addison Schwartzberg. She is set to play at Florida State College at Jacksonville State, becoming the second player from this year’s senior class to commit, joining Haleigh Thomas, who committed to Lynn University.
“Huge thank you to my dad for everything, as well as to Coach Amanda, Coach Brett, Coach Brad, the Tampa Mustangs staff, my amazing teammates, and God for guiding me,” Schwartzberg said. “Also, thank you, Coach Sabrina and FSCJ, for the opportunity.”
Schwatzberg has played on the varsity softball team for two years. On the mound, she won four games during his sophomore and junior years while pitching to an ERA of 3.90. Offensively, Schwatzberg hit .314 this past season, drove in 13 runs, and recorded 24 RBIs in her career. She also plays travel ball with the Tampa Mustangs. She will have one more season on varsity, looking to make a third consecutive trip to Regions before playing for a college team that won 19 games last season.
