A Coral Springs man was arrested after detectives say he attacked and attempted to rape a woman walking home while threatening that he had a gun.
A Coral Springs Police Department report indicates Jamarion Joseph Walden, 22, was taken into custody on November 9 and booked on charges of attempted sexual battery with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment.
According to the victim, the attack occurred during the day near Northwest 115th Avenue and Northwest 39th Street. The victim told officers she was walking home from the Dollar Tree on Sample Road when she noticed a man wearing heavy clothing out of place for the weather: a hooded jacket with a gray upper half and a dark lower half, black pants, and a full-face balaclava.
Moments later, police say, the victim claimed Walden grabbed her from behind, pulled her to the ground, and tried to drag her toward a shaded area across the street.
The woman said Walden pulled down part of her clothing, sexually assaulted her, and told her he had a gun, threatening her to stop screaming. She said she never saw a gun and continued yelling, ultimately breaking free as a vehicle approached, and Walden ran off. She returned home and called 911.
Detectives conducted a canvass of the area while the victim was transported to the Nancy J. Cotterman Center for a sexual assault examination.
Officers soon located and took Walden into custody. Further investigation showed surveillance video from neighborhood homes showing him following the victim moments before the attack.
Detectives also located another woman who reported a suspicious encounter with a masked man earlier that morning. She told police he wore a similar outfit and initiated contact with her while walking a dog.
During interviews with detectives, records show Walden ultimately admitted to grabbing the victim, causing her to fall, and telling her he had a gun. At one point, detectives say he acknowledged he “probably would have tried to rape her” had she not resisted.
Walden was booked into the Broward County Main Jail, where is is currently held without bond.
