Broward County Public Schools unveiled its five finalists for the prestigious 2025 Teacher of the Year award on Wednesday with a series of surprise classroom visits.
Among the educators honored is Deanna Waters, a literacy coach at Sawgrass Springs Middle School in Coral Springs.
It’s shocking,” said a surprised Waters. “I’ve never expected to be in this position. It’s such an honor. But yeah, it’s just really shocking.”
Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn, accompanied by School Board members, district administrators, and school leaders, personally delivered the news to each finalist and presented them with celebratory gift baskets.
“These educators exemplify the highest standards of teaching excellence,” said Superintendent Hepburn. “Their dedication and passion profoundly shape our students’ futures and strengthen our community.”
Other finalists for the 2025 BCPS Teacher of the Year include:
- Lillie deCastro, Magnet Coordinator, William T. McFatter Technical College and High School
- Matthew Feiler, Computer Science Teacher, West Broward High School
- Richard D. Lamarre, Science Teacher, Miramar High School
- Dr. Jennifer Mehu, First Grade Teacher, Park Lakes Elementary School
The 2025 Teacher of the Year award winner will be announced at the Caliber Awards Ceremony, held on February 7, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center.
