A Calvary Christian Academy standout makes history as the school’s first-ever selection into the 2025 McDonald’s All-American Game.
Shon Abaev, a Coral Springs resident and star forward for Calvary Christian Academy (CCA) in Fort Lauderdale, has earned a prestigious honor in high school basketball. He is the first player in CCA’s 25-year history to receive this recognition, securing his place among the nation’s top 24 seniors in the Class of 2025.
Abaev has called Coral Springs home for 14 years, living in the Woodside community with his parents, Olga and Ilya Abaev.
A 6’7” small forward, Abaev is the only player from Broward County — one of just three from South Florida and one of four from the entire state of Florida to earn a spot in this year’s game.
He has been a force for Calvary Christian’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball team, making an impact as both a scorer and a playmaker. He is ranked No. 6 among small forwards in the Class of 2025, No. 7 among Florida recruits, and No. 28 overall by 247Sports, earning a five-star composite rating of .9916.
The McDonald’s All-American Game has long been a launching pad for future basketball greats, with past participants including Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant.
Abaev will take the court on April 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The game will air on ESPN at 9 p.m. EST.
“Shon is a driving force for CCA’s Varsity Basketball team,” said Keith Huisman, Calvary Christian Academy’s District Director of Athletics. “He is a tireless worker who plays incredible team basketball but can take over a game at any moment. It is fun to watch him do what he loves.”
According to CCA, scouting experts have taken notice of Abaev’s unique skill set. Adam Finkelstein, Director of Scouting for 247Sports, evaluated him as “one of the most polished one-on-one scorers in the national class.”
“A big southpaw wing, with good positional size and an increasingly strong body, he’s a volume scorer who is capable of creating his own shot at virtually any time, including against a set half-court defense,” Finkelstein added.
After receiving 26 offers from top college programs, Abaev ultimately committed to the University of Cincinnati in the fall.
He joins an elite group of McDonald’s All-Americans who have played for Cincinnati, becoming the eighth signee in the program’s history to earn the honor. The list includes notable players like Roger McClendon (1984), Damon Flint (1993), DerMarr Johnson (1999), and Lance Stephenson Jr. (2009).
“Shon’s dedication, work ethic, and character are an inspiration to all of us,” said Cilk McSweeney, Head Coach of CCA’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball team, who has led the program to three Florida state titles during his 12-year coaching career. “We’re incredibly proud of what he’s accomplished, and we look forward to watching him continue to glorify Christ through his game.”
