The public memorial to honor the 17 victims of the Parkland school massacre has moved one step closer with the selection of Gordon Huether’s design.
On Tuesday, April 8, Sicilian Oven will host a fundraising event at its Coral Springs and Lighthouse Point locations to support the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to building the official public memorial honoring the 17 lives lost in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
The event includes all dine-in and takeout orders, with a portion of proceeds donated to the Foundation. Customers who wish to participate are asked to inform their server that they are supporting the give-back event.
Sicilian Oven’s Coral Springs location is at 10140 West Sample Road, and its Lighthouse Point restaurant is at 2846 N. Federal Highway.
“We appreciate the support of Sicilian Oven as we move into the fundraising and construction stage of the Memorial,” said Vice Chairman of the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation Tony Montalto, father of Gina Montalto and liaison to the victims’ families. “We hope to have a great turnout to support us and to support the generosity of Sicilian Oven. Just let your server know you are here to support this give-back event and a portion of your sale will be donated back to the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation.”
The Foundation recently approved a memorial design by artist Gordon Huether, featuring a series of concentric circles with a central fountain, seating, and 17 limestone obelisks—each representing one of the victims: Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque Anguiano, Jr., Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang.
Each obelisk will hold the victim’s name and information. A meaningful poem will be engraved into the plaza’s surface. Shade structures, designed with laser-cut patterns to cast evolving shadows, will provide comfort and visual symbolism. The memorial will be framed by 17 royal palm trees and a circular seating wall, reinforcing the unity and remembrance of the design.
The future site of the memorial is a 150-acre preserve bordering Coral Springs and Parkland, offering a quiet and contemplative space to reflect and honor the victims.
Donations to the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation can also be made online at www.parkland17.org/donate.
Sicilian Oven is located at 10140 W Sample Rd in Coral Springs and 2486 N Federal Hwy in Lighthouse Point.
