Stronger Girls Together is a peer based community of girls who fall between the ages of 6 and 12; their group leader helps them learn leadership skills through activities like crafts, journaling and yoga. Every month features a different theme. Right now, the girls are practicing mindfulness. In April, they move on to friendships and listening.
Last year, after the program took off in Boca Raton and Wellington, Stronger Girls Together came to Coral Springs in the fall of 2018. First holding their gatherings at First Church, they relocated to the city gymnasium in January. This week, they will host a free Open House event that gives future members a taste of the curriculum.
“I love how the girls in my group leave every gathering with tools that can be applied to everyday life. They learn to be better listeners and friends,” said team leader, Timney Petersen.
Petersen is a special needs teacher at Dillard High School, and is thrilled to be teaching the Coral Springs chapter of Stronger Girls Together.
A life-long resident in the city with “everything under the sun,” Petersen shared that she sees Stronger Girls Together as an alternative to more mainstream girls groups that sell things or work on achieving ranks.
The environment is creative and relaxed at the hour-long gatherings; Petersen and her group meet on Wednesday evenings and focus on friendship building exercises.
“I teach life management and coping skills — try to encourage my group to be more supportive of one another,” Petersen said.
She added that the $60 per month membership fee includes crafting supplies, a notebook and writing materials and members don’t need to come to meetings with anything but themselves.
“Well, a yoga mat or towel do come in handy for the meditation and yoga that is done at each gathering,” Petersen added with a laugh.
At the open house this Wednesday, the girls will be making stress balls, as well as striking a few yoga poses. The event is a drop-off, and longer than regularly scheduled gatherings; however, parents are welcome to stay and watch their daughters enjoy themselves and thrive.
Click here to register for the free sample class, or simply come to the next gathering on Wednesday, March 20, beginning this week at 5:45 p.m. The event runs until about 7:15 p.m. and meets at the Coral Springs Gymnasium, Classroom A located at 2501 Coral Springs Drive.
