A Coral Springs man is behind bars after attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl.
According to police reports, on December 29, the Coral Springs Police Department arrested a man, identified as Hosea Smith Jr., 33, of Coral Springs, on charges of Sexual Battery, Lewd and Lascivious Molestation, Lewd and Lascivious Exhibition, and Violation of Probation after a female victim reported an assault.
According to the victim’s statement to police, she had been dropped off at the Paragon Theater on Riverside Drive with a friend for a 7:15 p.m. movie but was denied entry due to being previously banned.
The victim told officers she decided to walk toward the mall, but during her walk, she noticed Smith walking with an adult woman and a child, who she assumed to be his family. Shortly after, she realized Smith was following her. She said she then asked him why he was following her, to which he commented, “Because you looked good,” then he allegedly exposed himself and touched her.
The victim claims that Smith then forced her into a struggle, during which he sexually assaulted her. She told officers that he repeatedly forcibly pulled down her pants and underwear and touched her butt and vagina, and “tried to put his thing up there.”
She also stated that Smith briefly took her phone, possibly to obtain her contact information, as evidenced by a missed call from Smith’s phone number later that evening. The phone number was what later led investigators to Smith.
Physical evidence was recovered from the scene, and a forensic examination revealed physical trauma to the victim’s vagina, consistent with her claims.
Records show Smith was detained during a traffic stop and later interviewed at the Coral Springs Police Department.
During the interview, Smith initially denied meeting the victim but later admitted to “squeezing her butt” and claimed that he believed the victim was 18 years old.
Records show that during interviews, officers discovered Smith was currently listed as a Violent Felony Offender of Special Concern who has been on probation since June 2012 for burglary and grand theft charges. His probation conditions required confinement to an approved residence, which he violated during the incident. His probation was set to expire in June 2027.
Smith was arrested and taken to the Broward County Main Jail.
